Belstone
Cricket Club annual dinner 2010

Forty six players and supporters of
Belstone Cricket Club recently enjoyed their 2010
Annual Dinner and Awards evening at the Tom Cobley
Tavern in Spreyton.
Chairman Dennis Edwards began the speeches by praising
the summer weather with only one game lost to rain
out of 37 in the Fixture List – the best season
since the Club re-formed in 1993. In the North Devon
League the Club finished comfortably mid-table in
Division Four with David Binns receiving the League’s
Young Player of the Year award (as the best Under
19 player out of 44 teams in the five divisions) at
a recent presentation in Barnstaple.

The inter-village Buckley Cup was the closest fought
for years with the result in doubt until the final
games when Spreyton emerged the winners by two points
from Belstone. Chris Filor accepted the Cup for
Spreyton and thanked Belstone for organising the
competition which provides plenty of hard-fought
cricket for village teams that have no other equivalent
fixtures.
Belstone President Peter Hammond then presented
the other awards:
- The Pearsall Trophy for the annual Belstone v
Sticklepath match was accepted by the winning Belstone
skipper Phil Woods.
- Three names went on the Hammond Bat for centuries
scored in the season: Phil Woods (136 not out),
David Binns (113) and Gary Sizmur (110 not out).
- The Woodward Cup for the batsman with the best
average was won by vice-captain Scott Tremain who
scored 588 runs at an average of 39.20.
- Both the Colts best individual performance and
overall season’s batting awards were won by
Trevor Oats.
- The Barton Best bowling award for the best figures
in a single game went for the second year running
to Jonathan Parsons, who took seven wickets for
three runs against Sticklepath, the second best
return in the Club’s history.
- The Telecare Cup for best overall bowling average
was awarded to David Binns for his 29 wickets at
an average of 12.00 apiece.
- The Colts best individual bowling award went to
Henry Holmes and the Colts overall season’s
bowling trophy was taken by Thomas Boother.
|
- The Fielding award was shared by Harry Bushin and
Phil Woods with 13 catches each.
- Five names were on the most ‘popular’
award of the night, the Duck Cup, which this year
only needed three ducks to win – Corey Burns,
Peter Harlow, James Ewen, Harry Bushin and Phil Dennis.
- Not surprisingly the Best Young Cricketer award
went to David Binns; the Best Junior Colt was Indigo
Brownhall, and the Best Colts All-Rounder was Corey
Burns.
- Naomi Wilkins won the Ladies award as the first
lady to turn out for Belstone for many years.
- Phil Dennis won the Good Servants Trophy in recognition
of his work with the Colts; Richard Penny, the Club’s
scorer and one of the founder members in 1993, was
awarded the Non-Playing Members award
- The evening was rounded off when Harry Bushin won
the Clubman of the Year trophy, as voted for by the
regular players.
