Belstone
made a slow start to their final game of the season on Sunday when
they were put in to bat by visitors Harberton
and accurate bowling by Darren Stibbs,
Keith Shepherd and Barry Goldsmith restricted their score to 39 for
two after 15 overs. The shackles were
broken when skipper Wayne Pearce took four boundaries off
Goatman’s first over and this was the
beginning of a fine partnership with opener Phil Woods. Pearce
continued to force the ball powerfully hitting ten fours and a six
before he was caught in the deep off left-armer
David Cook having scored 62 out of the third wicket stand of 93.
Woods carried on timing the ball effortlessly while the middle order
collapsed at the other end, all falling to the guile of Cook who
finished with four for 31 from eight overs.
Aidan Easterbrook joined Woods with the score on 161 for seven and
played a sparking cameo of 19 runs including two sixes. With the
overs running out Woods also accelerated
towards three figures taking 14 off the penultimate over to move into
the nineties and take the total past 200. The final over brought
another seven runs as Woods carried his bat through the whole innings
finishing with a career-best 97 not out, which included ten fours and
two sixes, and took his season’s aggregate past the 500-mark.
In
reply Harberton also started slowly
reaching 34 in the twelth over before Ray
(11) was clean bowled by Chris Walsh. Cook hit four boundaries in his
30 runs before touching a ball from Scott Tremain
to ‘keeper Johnny Carter with the score on 56 with over half the
overs gone. By now the visitors were so
far behind the clock that try as they might
to accelerate the run rate crept ever higher. David Lewis and
Stibbs (23) ran well between the wickets,
pinching unlikely singles and turning ones into twos but the
boundaries that were really needed proved elusive and when Lewis was
sixth out for 43, caught by Terry Jeal off a mis-hit
from the bowling of Luke Wonnacott, the
game was almost over. Two more wickets apiece for
Wonnacott and Jonathan Parsons
(7.2-1-25-2) saw Belstone through to a 46
run victory.
Belstone’s
season finishes with Played 32, Won 16, Lost 15, Tied 1, second place
(out of six teams) in the Buckley Cup and second bottom (out of six
teams) in the South Devon League Division Two, top score 100 exactly
by Andrew Paterson, best bowling 3.4-0-7-5 by Chris Walsh. The Club’s
Annual Dinner and Awards night will take place at
Belstone Village Hall on Saturday 7 October.
