Belstone’s first home game of the season began with a minute’s silence in memory of Okehampton College Principal Chris Powell who captained the Belstone President’s XI in the last few years and, before he arrived in Okehampton from Plymouth, played his cricket for visitors Old Suttonians.

Belstone set off at six runs an over thanks to a sparkling opening stand of 70 in 38 minutes between Pete Gross (25) and Richard Drake.  Andrew Paterson (28) helped push the score onto 112 before Drake was second out for a run-a-minute 53 with four 4s and a trademark six into the next field.  Dennis Edwards kept the middle order ticking over with 37 valuable runs, and, with useful contributions from the remaining batsmen, Belstone finished on a very useful 218 for seven after their 40 overs.  Old Sutts were a player short and had a limited attack, the pick of whom was Andy Taylor who bowled 13 overs of left-arm spin on the trot, taking two for 65.

The game seemed a forgone conclusion as Old Sutts crawled to just 15 off the first ten overs and even at the halfway stage had only reached 56 for one, thanks to tidy bowling by Jonathan Parsons and Harry Bushin, whose combined 15 overs conceded 34 runs.  But when John Horton (40) was out at 67 for two the stage was set for an onslaught from his son Jack which brought the game alive with a vengeance.  With good support from Paul Blank (36), Horton played a series of forceful drives which included six 4s and six 6s as the visitors rapidly closed in on their target.  Meanwhile Belstone chipped away with wickets at the other end thanks to Chris Gomersall (three for 60) and Terry Jeal (three for 34), and eventually they secured a 19 run victory with four balls to spare, when Horton was last out for a superb 94, the third stumping victim for keeper Drake.

Belstone man-of-the-match: Richard Drake.
