Belstone’s poor form in 40-over afternoon games continued last Sunday when they suffered their fifth consecutive defeat, out-played in all departments by Raleigh who cruised to a nine wicket victory in a South Devon League Division Two match.  Put in to bat Belstone suffered the worst of starts, losing both openers with only one extra on the board.  Further self-inflicted damage came with the score on 16 in the ninth over, when Wayne Pearce failed to beat a sharp throw from point.  Andrew Paterson was next out, having made 20 of the first 26 runs, the second victim of left-armer Matt Tarry, who returned excellent figures of six overs, two wickets for nine runs.  Phil Woods and Chris Walpole (9) then kept the attack at bay for the next 55 minutes while adding 47 careful runs for the fifth wicket in 14 overs.  They were both out to consecutive balls, Woods unluckily picking out the one boundary fielder on the leg side, having hit two fours and a six in his 29.  After this the innings folded up alarmingly with the last six wickets falling for just 15 runs in the course of four overs, Danny Loman taking all but one of them to finish with five for 21 from 8.4 overs.

Belstone’s total of 88 was never likely to be defendable and so it proved as Raleigh openers Rob Lowe and Mike Pigeon dealt confidently with everything the Belstone bowlers produced, taking their team to the brink of victory before Lowe gave the visitors their solitary wicket, leg before to Chris Gomerall for 27.  Pigeon completed proceedings with his ninth four and his maiden half century as the innings ended with over 16 overs to spare.
