Belstone travelled to a sun-baked Recreation Ground at Torquay on Sunday for their latest South Devon League Division Two game and were soon toiling in the field as a mammoth second wicket stand developed between Justin Yau and Jonathan Rice. With both batsmen seizing on anything short or over-pitched the ball raced over the hard outfield as they rattled up 147 runs in 18 overs and it was only the introduction of spinner Terry Jeal that stopped the avalanche. Yau, who survived an early caught and bowled chance, hit nine boundaries in his 61 before being well caught at deep square leg by Harry Bushin with the score on 161 at the half-way stage. Rice, whose 92 runs included 17 fours and a six, was then smartly taken one-handed in the gully by Chris Walpole. With Pete Gross (one for 30 from his nine overs) joining Jeal to bowl an accurate spell the run rate declined and wickets fell steadily until a late rally between William Sears (28) and Baustead (18 not out) took Torquay to a very respectable 239 for eight after their 40 overs, Jeal finishing with four for 28 from nine overs.
Belstone began their reply steadily at four an over with an opening partnership of 35 between Richard Drake (26) and Dennis Edwards (16) but with the introduction of the spin of Andy Yau and Dave Lear the visitors collapsed in spectacular fashion. With several leg before decisions and a vicious leg-spinner from Lear which bowled skipper Wayne Pearce behind his legs as he offered no stroke, Belstone lost seven wickets for 28 runs in just ten overs to leave them at a nadir of 77 for nine, Yau claiming three for 40 and Lear five for 43. The mood was lightened when last man Jeal joined Phil Woods (eight fours and a six in a cultured 51 not out) for eight overs which not only saw a batting point gained as the total passed three figures, but also shattered Belstone’s previous highest ever last wicket stand by 19 runs as the partnership added 66 runs. The innings finally ended in the 32nd over when Sears’ first ball bowled Jeal for 28 giving Torquay a convincing victory by 96 runs.
This Sunday Belstone have a home League game against Buckfastleigh, 2.30pm start, followed by a home evening match against Yeoford on Wednesday 14 June. There will also be a car boot sale on the ground from 10am on Saturday 24 June.
