Last Sunday rain put paid to a potentially exciting finish in Belstone’s latest South Devon League Division Two match at top-of-the-table Brixham.  After skipper Paterson won the toss and put the home side in, James Fletcher (24) and Newman (8) made a cautious three-an-over start in the face of an accurate and hostile opening spell from Parsons and Paterson himself.  Tim Robinson came in at 32 for one and transformed the run rate with powerful drives in a fine 79, until he was sixth out with the score on 180.  Good support came from Paul Heath (23), Chris Sleep (24 not out) and Mark Orchard (21), the latter falling to an extraordinary diving catch in the covers by keeper Drake, the ball going so high that any one of seven fielders had time to get under it. Belstone’s ground fielding held up well under pressure as Brixham ended on 218 for six after their 40 overs.

Once again Drake (22) began an innings with a six as the visitors raced to 34 in four overs with five men back on the boundary.  Orchard and Richard Downs then found some extra pace with a good line and length to put a brake on the scoring so that the next 34 runs took 13 overs.  By then however persistent rain had set in causing the game to be abandoned as a draw after 19 overs of Belstone’s reply with Phil Woods on 25 not out.
