Last season’s inaugural match between Belstone and a C&G Celebrity XI chosen by local tradesman Chris Walsh (owner of C&G Plastering Services) had a nail-biting finish as Belstone sneaked a two wicket win with two balls remaining.  This years fixture went even closer to the wire with the winning run coming off the penultimate ball of a low-scoring match reduced to 30 overs after early rain.  Belstone’s opening attack of Rob Hall and Andrew Hooper bowled their seven overs for only three runs, accounting for Mike Jelley and Simon Jefferies in the process, Hall bowling Jefferies with one that cut back into him after a series of testing outswingers.  Former Somerset and England star Vic Marks was content to work the ball around for singles with the slow outfield making everyone work hard for their runs and after Luke Wonnacott held a fine one-handed catch to dismiss Duncan Keir off Buster Francis, the Celebrity XI were struggling at 20 for four in the tenth over.  A lively 22 from Johnny Coburn began the recovery before Matt Dennis bowled a fine ball that nipped back through the left-hander’s defences.  Further success for the fielding side came as Dennis Edwards (2-0-8-2) took wickets with successive balls to leave the score on 74 for seven.  With the overs ticking away Marks began to pick up the pace, reaching his half-century with a six off Wayne Pearce, one of four such lofty blows he struck off Pearce in just ten balls.  The final five overs yielded 41 runs as the Celebrity XI finished on 135 for eight with Marks remaining 68 not out.

In reply Pearce and Edwards made a cautious start reaching 45 in the twelth over before Edwards was out for 14.  Pearce then took advantage of a dropped catch to dominate the top of the order hitting 6 fours and a six before being third out for 67 with the score on 102.  An all-too-familiar Belstone batting collapse then threatened to throw the game away as Marks, with the off-spinning skill that brought him 859 first class wickets, ripped through the middle order taking three for four from three overs, to leave the Belstone wobbling on 104 for six, still needing 32 from six overs.  The pressure was eased when Luke Wonnacott (17 not out) hit the otherwise excellent Simon Jefferies (5-1-22-2) for two big sixes over midwicket so that by the time the final over began only four where required.  Even then it took until the fifth ball before skipper Andrew Paterson hit the winning run to square leg to secure a three wicket win for Belstone.
