Spreyton took a maximum 15 points from their opening Buckley Cup match against Belstone at Rew Meadow on 15 May.  Openers Tony Niven and Steve Wright got them off to a cracking start before both retired on 26 and 28 respectively.  The seven-an-over momentum was continued by Chris Filor (20) and Charlie Hancock (28 retired) as Belstone’s fielding grew sloppy in the difficult conditions of rain, slippery outfield and wet ball.  Two wickets in the final 20th over for skipper Andrew Paterson (3-0-19-2) could not disguise the fact that the visitors score of 131 for four was a formidable one.

Belstone looked to be making light work of their reply when the score raced to 33 off the first three overs thanks to some ferocious hitting by Richard Drake, who hit four sixes off the luckless Julian Tompkins before retiring on 28, having faced just eight deliveries. Phil Woods (26 retired) and Paterson (19) kept up the run chase but when they departed Hancock worked through the middle order with an accurate spell.  In very poor light last men Chris Walsh (15) and Jonathan Parsons (5 not out) valiantly kept up the required ten an over rate before Drake and Woods returned to the crease with 20 needed off 12 balls.  Only one more boundary was scored before Hancock wound up proceedings by clean bowling Woods to finish with the match-winning figures of four for 11 from 3.2 overs, giving Spreyton a 14 run win.
