The crowds at Rew Meadow have come to expect a close game in the annual fixture between Belstone and the C&G All-Star XI selected by Chris Walsh and this year was no exception.  Put in to bat the All-Stars struggled in the face of testing opening spells from Jonathan Parsons and Harry Bushin so that by the time they had bowled their allotted eight overs apiece the score had only reached 30 and the top four were back in the pavilion.  Skipper Walsh then played a careful supporting role as Johnny Coburn began to dominate the attack with fluent off-side drives and three savage pulls for leg-side sixes.  They added 81 for the fifth wicket until a moment of carelessness saw Walsh run out for 23 when he failed to ground his bat when virtually in his ground.  Coburn was next out for 63 to a fine running catch in the covers by Richard Drake.  A flurry of hitting at the end saw a swift 14 from Fraser Willis and 17 bludgeoned runs for Terry Jeal from six balls faced to take the All-Stars to an all-out total of 156 from two balls short of their 40 overs.

Belstone started confidently with a half century opening partnership in ten overs between Drake (29) and Gary Sizmur (24) before they both fell to mis-hits taken in the covers by Coburn off Simon Jefferies (8-0-40-2).  Phil Woods pushed the score on quickly until he misjudged a long-hop from Andrew Finley and was bowled for 16 to make the score 79 for three after 17 overs.  This precipitated a familiar Belstone collapse with Finley running through the middle order to finish with five wickets for 25 from his eight overs, leaving Belstone on the brink of defeat at 93 for eight.  The score then crept up in singles and twos as Chris Walpole battled to keep out Jeal’s accurate spin, his eight overs costing just 13 runs.  At the other end Colin Tucker took 12 off Vic Marks’ first over to leave Belstone needing 25 from the last five overs.  This partnership was finally broken after ten overs and 39 runs when Marks stretched to take a caught and bowled chance from Walpole who was out for 22.  The game ended two overs later with Coburn taking his third catch as Belstone were all out 15 runs short with Tucker undefeated on 30, to give the All-Stars their first victory in the three-match series.
